Technology and Education

Technology is an increasingly important part of modern living, and, therefore, an increasingly important part of education. Video games are used as educational tools, and most college assignments involve internet research and typing on a computer. It’s a marvel of modernity, but there are some downsides to this approach to education, and it manifests mostly in the form of technical issues and costs.

While computers and other gadgets are far less expensive than they used to be, the wear and tear placed on them by anonymous students leads to needing to repair or replace them, which can be costly. It’s important, of course, to try to mitigate this as much as possible, hence the prohibition of food and drinks in computer labs.

However, damage to computers is not always a hardware problem. Computer viruses are perhaps the leading cause of computers needing repaired and replaced, and avoiding them and treating them are surprisingly tricky. While viruses are avoided fairly easily via restricting internet access, this can only do so much, as you never know where a virus may be lurking.

So, what can we do about this? Aside from restricting internet access and prohibiting food and drink near computers in schools, there are a few other things to take care of. First and foremost, students need to be taught earlier how best to handle computers to avoid undue damage to them. Then, of course, there’s the matter of viruses again. While students can only visit so many websites to avoid this problem, among others, there’s still more we can do. Installing an antivirus software, like Norton Antivirus can bolster your computers’ “immune system” to protect it against viruses, so you don’t have any surprises viruses costing you money.
